Potassium + Iodine
Potassium is a mineral which balances whole body pH and is also an electrolyte involved in healthy water balance, by controlling the flow of body fluids into and out of tissues and cells.
Iodine is a trace element that is vital to the health of the thyroid gland. It also provides the building blocks for the hormones secreted by the thyroid. Potassium Iodide & Nuclear Accidents/Disasters: Radioactive Iodine (Radioiodine) is a major radioisotope constituent of both nuclear power plant accidents and nuclear ('dirty bomb') explosions. Since Chernobyl, it is evident that the thyroid gland is especially vulnerable to atomic injury because radioactive isotopes of iodine are a major component of fallout. In such cases, supplementation with Potassium Iodide is recommended in order to saturate the thyroid gland with safe stable iodine so that there is no capacity for later uptake of radioactive iodine. Once the thyroid is saturated, then any additional iodine (radioactive or stable) that is later inhaled or ingested is quickly eliminated via the kidneys.
Iodine & Vegan Diets Iodine is typically undesirably low in UK vegan diets unless supplements, iodine rich seaweeds or foods containing such seaweeds are consumed.
