    soy isoflavones

    Soy Isoflavones

Isoflavones are naturally occurring plant hormone compounds (phyto-oestrogens) that are particularly concentrated in soybeans.

Isoflavones have potent antioxidant and some oestrogenic properties, with a mild chemopreventitive action. Genistein, Daidzein and Glycitein being the major isoflavones found in soybeans.

Heart Health & Soy Isoflavones: Soy isoflavones appear to reduce cardiovascular disease risk via several distinct mechanisms. Isoflavones inhibit the growth of cells that form artery clogging plaque. These arteries usually form blood clots which can lead to a heart attack. There is some evidence that isoflavones are the active ingredients in soy responsible for improving cholesterol profile.
  • helps prevent the buildup of arterial plaque, reducing the risk of heart attack & CVA (stroke)
  • may reduce total cholesterol and LDL levels

Mens/Prostate Health & Soy Isoflavones: The mild oestrogenic action of Soy Isoflavones is thought to have a positive effect on Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate. Soy Isoflavones can help inhibit cell proliferation in the prostate gland.

Soy Isoflavones also have a mild chemopreventitive action which may also be helfpful for male hormone-related cancers, helping to slow prostate cancer growth.

A recent study from the Hawai Cancer Research institute found that soy supplements reduced levels of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) without impacting testosterone levels.

Womens/Menopause Health & Soy Isoflavones: As Isoflavones resemble the body's oestrogen in structure, they may bind to oestrogen receptors, thus, producing some of the benefits of oestrogen without negative side effects. Over 14 clinical trials have shown that the isoflavones in Soy can improve women's health during perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause.

Oestrogen deprivation following the menopause is a factor for developing osteoporosis, cardiovascular problems, and unpleasant menopausal symptoms. Genistein, the main isoflavone of soy, is thought to be primarily responsible for both the short, and long-term, positive health effects on menopause::

  • helping to reduce the incidence and intensity of hot flushes & night sweats
  • supporting post menopausal cardiac health
  • improving bone mineral density to protect against osteoporosis

In September 2006 , the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) favourably reviewed the research evidence of Isoflavones in terms of menopause symptom relief as well as skeletal & cardiovascular health for menopausal women. This coupled with some negative reporting on Black Cohosh, has meant that Soy Isoflavones are once gaining ground as the health supplement of choice for women, during perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause.

Soy Foods vs Soy Isoflavone Supplements: A stronger benefit has been observed for postmenopausal women taking soy isoflavone supplements rather than for soy products.

NOW Soy Isoflavones: Extra Strength Soy Isoflavones have been extracted through a proprietary process that results in the highest natural levels of Genistein - a quantum leap in potency over most soy isoflavone products.
